German Poetry Now: A bilingual online-anthology, featured by DAS GEDICHT chapbook
Ulrich Johannes Beil
The table’s gone
No sooner than the shipping company carries off the cargo,
the room starts sensing everything you do.
It breathes – listens intently with its walls
to the slightest creaking from the hardwood floor.
The remaining things are watching you:
the sunglasses, dignified, an Aztec insect,
the wallet with its sly Mephistophelian smirk.
(Did you clear the drainage of the hairy glob?
Did you free the bathtub, spick and span,
from the ghosts of daddy longlegs?)
You may go over here and over there –
but there is nothing left to do.
That even a grain of dust is composed of something
(some sort of filthy atom),
beliefs are rattled in the emptiness.
The table’s gone; take the floor.
The cup’s gone, take the shoe.
Of yourself not much more remains
than this beam of light on your forearm –
in the window the fragment of a planet
that meanwhile has forgotten its roundness.

Der Tisch ist weg
Sobald die Spedition die Fracht fortgeschafft hat,
nimmt der Raum alles wahr, was du tust.
(irgendwelchen schmutzigen Atomen),
erschüttert den Glauben an die Leere.
Der Tisch ist weg, nimm den Boden.
Der Becher ist weg, nimm den Schuh.
Von dir ist nicht viel mehr übrig
als dieser Streifen Licht auf dem Unterarm –
im Fenster das Fragment eines Planeten,
der sein Rundsein in der Zwischenzeit vergaß.

+ About the author / Zum Autor
Ulrich Johannes Beil was born in 1957 in Munich. His widely recognized literary work is supplemented by an enormous academic activity with professorships at the Hokkaido University in Japan and at the University of São Paulo. He studied German literature, philosophy, theology, and political science in Munich. Today he teaches media theory in Zurich, Switzerland. Beil’s work is powerful not simply because reflection constantly follows closely on the heels of imagination, but because his efforts aim at putting the vividness and freshness of the poetic voice first. His work is often occupied with the nature of poetry as a scriptural art, as the title of one of his collections of poetry hints at »Aufgelassene Archive« (Archives Left Open, DuMont Cologne 1998). Having contributed to every literary publication of significance, such as »Akzente« (Munich), »Sinn und Form« (published by the Academy of the Arts in Berlin), or the Austrian avant-gardist magazine »manuskripte« (founded in 1960), Ulrich Johannes Beil also co-edited DAS GEDICHT for several years and has remained its spiritus rector ever since.
